Cockroaches are active throughout the year, but many Indian homes notice a sharp increase during monsoon. You may see them near the sink at night, inside kitchen drawers, under the gas stove, around bathroom drains, or even in living areas. The reason is simple: monsoon gives cockroaches moisture, warmth, food waste, and new hiding places.
Why monsoon helps cockroaches
Cockroaches need moisture to survive. During rainy months, drains stay wet, garbage areas smell stronger, seepage increases, and small cracks remain damp. If outside drains or compound areas flood, cockroaches move into drier indoor spaces. Apartment buildings also face movement through shafts, ducts, common drains, and garbage rooms. Once they enter, they hide behind appliances, inside cabinet hinges, near motors, and around plumbing lines.
Signs you should not ignore
- Small black droppings in drawers, below the sink, or near the fridge motor.
- Egg cases in cabinet corners or behind stored items.
- A musty smell near closed cabinets or wet storage areas.
- Cockroach movement after switching on kitchen lights at night.
- Repeated activity near floor traps, drain covers, and utility balconies.
Practical prevention during rains
Start with hygiene and moisture control. Dry the sink area before sleeping. Do not leave dirty utensils overnight if the problem is active. Keep dustbins closed and empty them daily. Clean oil stains below the stove and near exhaust areas. Check for leaking taps, wet cabinet boards, loose drain covers, and gaps around pipe entries. Use mesh or proper covers on drains where possible.
Why professional treatment works better in heavy cases
For light activity, cleaning and sealing may help. For repeated monsoon activity, professional gel baiting, crack treatment, drain treatment, and monitoring are more reliable. Good treatment does not mean spraying the full kitchen randomly. It means placing products where cockroaches actually travel and hide. Families should ask about preparation steps, re-entry time, and after-care. After treatment, keep the kitchen dry and clean, otherwise the same conditions will invite cockroaches again.
