A simple Indian home guide to common pests, where they hide, and what actually helps control them for the long term.

Most Indian homes deal with pests at some point. The problem may start with a few ants near sugar, one cockroach in the kitchen, or mosquitoes near stored water. If the cause is not fixed, the same problem keeps coming back. Permanent control means removing food, water, shelter, and entry points, not only spraying when pests are seen.

Common pests found in Indian homes

The most common household pests are cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes, flies, bed bugs, termites, rats, mice, spiders, silverfish, and lizards. Some are mainly a nuisance, but others can damage property or spread germs. Cockroaches hide in drains, cabinets, and appliances. Ants follow food trails. Mosquitoes breed in clean stagnant water. Termites quietly damage wooden frames and furniture. Rodents enter through gaps, pipes, drains, and open storage areas.

What you can do first

  1. Keep dry groceries, pet food, and snacks in closed containers.
  2. Clean oil, crumbs, and food waste every night, especially in the kitchen.
  3. Remove standing water from coolers, trays, buckets, plant plates, and terrace corners.
  4. Seal gaps around pipes, doors, windows, bathroom ducts, and utility lines.
  5. Declutter cartons, newspapers, and unused wooden items where pests can hide.

Why pests return after spraying

Many people use a strong spray and feel the issue is solved. Usually it is not. Sprays may kill visible insects but eggs, nests, colonies, or entry routes remain active. Cockroach gel baiting, termite soil treatment, rodent proofing, drain treatment, or mosquito source reduction may be needed depending on the pest. Wrong treatment can also push pests deeper into cracks.

When to call a professional

Call a pest control team if pests are seen in more than one room, activity returns after cleaning, there are children or elderly people at home, or you see termite mud tubes, rodent droppings, bed bug bites, or heavy cockroach activity. A proper inspection should identify the pest, source, treatment method, safety instructions, and follow-up schedule. For long-term results, combine professional treatment with simple daily prevention.
